Want to see something AMAZING?????

This was a collaboration between 8th grade RR/RW teachers at Spring Garden, as well as Tasha Brockett and our 4 level students. We had a two day remediation for students scoring lower than a 4 on unit 1 objectives...we then split up the kids between teachers for remediation on their specific need, while Tasha took our 4 level students and had them preview unit 2 objectives for teaching strategies. This is the list Tasha compiled from the kiddos work...it's a GREAT basis for unit 2 instruction!… Continue

I…

Much like Facebook posts (which sadly we still can't access--legally, so to speak--in our district), we might analyze others' existing six-word stories for voice. They are indeed so rich with that!

6-word stories

What tremendous learning already this morning (less than two hours in!) from Dean Shareski as a part of SJSD EduWeek. We've dabbled already with compfight as a place to find images for a variety of tasks in all disciplines and coupled that with Picnik as a way to use those images (or our own) to write six-word stories. Check out our work at…See More

"Compose text using narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive features"

Though I believe in the intent of this objective (see the discussion title) and GLE/CLE--to create an authentic and quality piece of writing that embodies effective characteristics of multiple genres rather than getting stuck in a formula for a particular kind of writing, such as description--I have still struggled with how I get my students to do this. How do I get them to write beyond the safety of a five-paragraph essay? How do I get them to realize that an anecdote within a longer essay can…See More
